Project Description
Please answer all of the following questions. You must fill out this section, even if you are choosing from the menu of projects on page 3.
- What will you call your school’s Sustainability Project? Be creative! WATER POLLUTION: WHAT'S THE SOLUTION
- Describe your project (please answer all questions): What will your students do with the funds you are requesting? What is the timeline? How they will be involved as leaders through the project? How will the project increase sustainability? Will any partners be involved, and, if so, how? What are the anticipated outcomes from your project? How will the project impact the rest of the school and/or your community? WATER POLLUTION: WHAT'S THE SOLUTION Our students will be working to improve the water quality of our community while also educating the school community about the importance of water conservation and pollution. Our green team will begin by visiting SciTech to learn how rain gardens can improve and conserve water. We also will learn how water pollution is impacting the bay. We will also reach out to the Canton Trash Wheel and meet with personnel (Leanna Wetmore) from the Healthy Harbor Initiative. After, they will create a handout for the school community that documents both the importance of water conservation and the causes of water pollution. We plan to hold a couple of fundraisers to help raise money for the Canton Water Wheel. Students will use recycled materials to make holiday ornaments for others to purchase. In addition, we will be using the second grade's data to determine where storm drains are needed to be painted near our school. We will then partner with the second graders, Audobon and the Adopt a Block Program to paint the storm drains.
- Energy conservation will be another topic we will address in the Green Team. We will start by conducting energy audits of random classrooms all over the building. We will then encourage teachers and staff members to save energy by enrolling them in an energy contest with prizes for the top rooms. Students will work together with our facilities department as necessary to address these problems. Students will also create a presentation commercial for staff on ways to conserve energy in their classrooms. They will continue to distribute green cleaning products that they will create. On service day in April, our team of students will teach their fellow classmates about the importance of conserving water, water pollution, and energy conservation.
- Which area(s) does your project address?
Energy Conservation
Solid Waste Reduction
Habitat Restoration
Structures for Environmental Learning
Responsible Transportation
Healthy School Environment
- Do you know yet how you want to work with the Baltimore Energy Challenge to incorporate energy conservation into your project (see page 9 for details on this requirement)? If so, please describe. We would like them to attend our community fair when we have it.
- Please check this box if you would be interested in having a corporate volunteer group assist with your project.
