Classroom PresentationsThis quarter we worked together to create presentations about recycling to present to the pre-k through 2nd grade. We came prepared with a rehearsed PowerPoint presentation, activities, prizes and even a song. Our student presenters as well as the audiences were so excited. Teachers provided feedback to our presenters for future presentations. Service DayFor service day, our Green Team also assisted the Pre-K students with a park clean up. Additionally, they helped the 1st grade "Bloom the Block" and place flowers and notes on all the neighbors' doorsteps. https://photos.app.goo.gl/rPV0ExiNaVkxi1Bs1 Upcoming Projects/TripsWe are really excited for our upcoming trip to the Anita Leigh Estuary Center on June 7th. Litter in the CourtyardOne of the items in our action plan was to talk about the trash/litter that was around our school and come up with solutions. Many of the students were concerned about there not being a trash can or recycling can in the Courtyard where they lined up in the morning. They complained that there was often empty chip bags, wrapper and water bottles strewn about. So, we invited Mr. Benito, the head custodian, to one of our meetings to share our concerns. He too, was concerned about the trash, but explained to us that because of rodents, there couldn't be any trash cans outside. Instead, we decided to purchase some signage to hang up in the courtyard and on the surrounding fences to remind people not to litter, as well as that food and drink were not allowed in the courtyard. Mr. Benito asked the Green Team to help monitor and remind students of this in the morning. We are coordinating a date to hang up our new signs (which are in both English and Spanish!). Ms. Bridget- Trash TalkMs. Bridget came in and presented her program called "Trash Talk." During her presentation, she told us about the problem of trash, litter and waste. She shared some statistics about pollution and shared many ways that students and their families could help decrease the amount of waste and litter that they create. The students were very into her presentation and were excited to see her "Recy-Queen Costume" made completely of waste materials. The students are considering making their own costumes for their own presentations that they plan to do for the Pre-K students around Earth Day. We are hoping to invite Ms. Bridget back to help. Recycling SignsWe worked on making signs for all the recycling bins in the schools, as Mr. Benito informed us that many classrooms were not recycling the right things. He told us that when they don't, many times, the trash needs to be thrown out since they can't separate it all. Our plan is to hang these signs and in the next coming months, we hope to do some classroom presentations. Sci-TechThe Green Team also had an opportunity to visit Sci-Tech to learn about rain gardens and how they help the environment. We learned about the health of the Bay and what we can do to help.
Action PlanAt our first Green Team meeting, we met to complete our survey, as well as to come up with an action plan for the year. Out of our first meeting, we found that many of us were interested in helping to stop pollution and general littering in and around the school. We also wanted to help increase recycling at our school and in our community. You can see our surveys and our action plans below: Surveys Action Plan Styrofoam AdvocacyAndrea Calderon visited the Green Team to discuss the dangers of Styrofoam and how we could be advocates for the ban of Styrofoam. We plan to continue our learning and write some letters to voice our concerns about styrofoam and our support for the ban in Maryland.
